Job Description

Dr. John Hoganson retired in July 2014 after working for the North Dakota Geological Survey for 33 years. During his tenure, John established the North Dakota State Fossil Collection, was instrumental in establishing legislation to manage and protect fossil resources in North Dakota, was involved with establishing a federal law to protect fossil resources on federal lands in the United States, established working relationships with state and federal entities regarding fossil resource management, and added thousands of fossils to the State Fossil Collection through active collecting and donations. He started the NDGS public fossil dig program and was involved with establishing the prehistoric life of North Dakota and the geology of North Dakota sections for the North Dakota studies program. John has given hundreds of talks about North Dakota paleontology educating the general public and fellow paleontologists about the prehistoric life of our state. He is also responsible for establishing dozens of exhibits across the state allowing regional museums to showcase local fossils. Now serving as paleontologist emeritus, he is able to focus entirely on his research.
